Things I figured out today

  • Time. I feel like we are all just these floating bubbles of people who are constantly trying to figure out how to get more time. I don't think I'll ever figure this one out. I had the most jam-packed weekend, which was awesome, but now I'm back at work and tired and wishing I'd just spent a good few hours chilling on my couch with a book. Is this something we learn with age? If so, it's taken ages. (This being said, I wouldn't change a minute of my weekend if I could. I'd change how tired I felt when I woke up this morning, however).
  •  My job is still awesome.

  • There are some very.freaking.cool bars in Auckland now. Have you tried Everybodys or Libertine in the city? Or The Commons in Takapuna, where rainwater is caught and used to water the vertical garden wall at the bar? I have no doubt that these places are just as good, if not better, than some of the best bars in Melbourne.

  • Have you been keeping up to date with the feud between Kelly Osbourne and Lady Gaga? I usually have very little time for such foolish drama, but I read a summary of the fight on BuzzFeed and I actually found it a very interesting discourse. I'm not sure whether it was necessary for Sharon O to step in and answer on behalf of her daughter - but I did appreciate where the argument headed after that. I find it quite sad that two celebrities who have such large numbers of young fans and are both quite public with their anti-bullying stance can publicly shame and insult each other and think that that's a good way to settle an argument. Seriously, someone set up a sweet dinner for them at a cheap Japanese restaurant and let them talk it out. Life is far too short for stupid fights.
  • I'm twenty nine tomorrow. Eeeeek.
  • I actually barely even think about my age these days. I recall freaking out when I turned 25 and thinking about how I really should have my shiz together and my life sorted by that age, and then a few months later I turned around and moved to Whistler because that's a mature, responsible, adult thing to do. So from then on, I decided age is just a number and really has no relevance on what you should be doing with your life and how you should be acting. Apart from the fact that I know I'll get to an age where I'll have to stop showing off my knees, but I'm cool with that.
  • Summer really is the best, isn't it?

  •  Campari is the best summer drink, isn't it? If you haven't discovered the wonder that is Campari, I strongly suggest you do.
  • I'm infinitely more happy if I a) have enough sleep b) walk by the water at least once a week and c) clean my room. Refer to dot point one for the reasons why I'm about 68% happy right now. I need an early night.
  • Silo Park Cinema. Best free thing to do in Auckland. An old wasteland full of ugly silos has been transformed into a multi-purpose area filled with grass, market space, outdoor bars, and free movies projected onto the Silos every Friday night in summer. Perrrrrrfect. I saw Moonrise Kingdom there on a balmy Friday evening and I was so happy about it.

  1. I love these sorts of posts :)

Maaaan Auckland is looking pretty sweet recently. I never thought of it as a cool city to live in, but it seems to have done a turn around on me.

I WISH I thought my job was awesome... What do you do? Maybe I should do that lol

Too poor for campari, its 2.99 wine for me at the moment :( relates back to the job thing

Summer sure is the best, although I've never loved a summer more than this current summer in Melbourne. I LOVE THE HEAT!

    1. Auckland is freakishly beautiful, and starting to get cooler by the week. I'm stoked to be a part of it.

I work in publishing - BOOKS everywhere. It's a treat. What do you do? You need a job you love - don't settle!

Once you get some funds, try Aperol. Cheaper than Campari, but pretty much same same.

I LOVE THE HEAT TOO! EMBRACE IT!

  2. How did you get into publishing may I ask? I am a book lover and hate working in admin. I would love to be a proof reader or copy writer as I type and write and read fast and am a stickler for books. But alas! Boring old mining admin for me!

Auckland looks amazing. I think I need to arrange a holiday there. My sister might even move over there in years to come as she just got engaged to her kiwi boyfriend. They are so sweet.

    1. I got into the industry by doing a course in NZ - it is a very highly regarded course and it covers all aspects of the industry, both practical and theoretical, so I knew it was worthwhile. We had work experience weeks and lots of chances to network, which is how I got my job.

I would suggest trying to do some work experience, even online, as it shows you're keen. Try pedestrian.tv (I think that's the website!) as often things pop up on there for online writers, etc.

Doing a course definitely helps, but obviously that's not available to everyone. Good luck!
